Dealing With The Grief Of Losing A Loved One

The grief of losing a loved one is among the most difficult emotional pains that we may face in our life journey. The path that grieving takes often depends on the relationship we’ve had with that person. And as I have written before, the grief of losing a loved one can even be a cherished pet.

Depending on that relationship, it may bring up a myriad of varying emotions of sadness, despair, anger, guilt and even relief, if your loved one had been suffering. Most folks tend to move in and out of all these emotions, even in the same day. And although the deep pain you feel right after your loved one dies may lessen, you will likely feel the loss, to some degree, all your life. That doesn’t mean you can’t move on and enjoy things in life again, you can. How long before you get there is an individual thing and is based on many variables surrounding the loss, the relationship and your ability to cope at that particular time in your life.

I don’t believe one can be done with grief in a day. It takes time and the process needs to be worked through. You will have sadness, questions and memories to work through. This is part of the grieving, but also part of the healing. If you lived with the loved one, then emotions felt are often stronger. There may be many related areas that affect your grieving process depending on the role that person played in your everyday routine.

We all grieve in similar, but different ways and let us be sensitive to that. Loss is hard and losing a loved one has got to be the hardest thing in life. It affects us in such strong ways, causing us to deal with emotions that can truly pierce our soul.

As you work through the grief of losing a loved one, hold onto the knowledge that you will get past these strong emotions, learn how to deal with them positively and will heal from the acute emotional pain of this loss. Whatever loss you have experienced, it is part of your life journey, so although you may be saddened by this chapter, you can move on. I wish I could say it will be easy, but it won’t be. If ever you feel that the grief of losing a loved one is just unbearable, seek support to help you in this difficult time.
