What Is The Helping Mindset?

helping mindsetI think it is safe to say that everyone, other than maybe infants, have the opportunity and choice to help another at some point in our lives. Sometimes that choice is daily or for some maybe it can even be counted in minutes. The point is, we can choose to have the helping mindset or the selfish one. Either can go too far to unhealthy extremes.

When I think about this helping mindset, it is interesting how humans are spread out on the scale in terms of this mindset. Different challenges in our lives may subconsciously dictate how strong this helping mindset is at any given time.

While we must take care of ourselves, why not help another along the way. We all could use that on our journey. It could be an encouraging word, a prayer or helping someone with yard work. There are tons of ways to be helpful along the way.

And oftentimes, it is not necessarily about “helping” another as it is helping each other in the daily journey of life. It’s about doing life together. It’s more about relationship than a particular act.

Thinking about the cute video here with the shepherd helping do the dishes, the dog is probably not helping her because he thought I want to be helpful, he is there because of a relationship. He is enjoying doing life together. He looks like he is enjoying it too.

I am so far from perfect on this topic. I think humans in general have a tendency to be selfish. It seems like this is getting worse. Yet there are still so many out there that do have this helping mindset. Actually some very extraordinary people. I am so thankful for these people. But even though not all of us will be on such a grand scale, it is worth considering and working on having a more helping mindset.

This helping mindset doesn’t have to be perfect. I think it is important to realize that it comes down to attitude. We all have our own story, our own journey, but we are all on the same road. We are “doing life” together. Our help doesn’t have to be earth shattering to be helpful. And it doesn’t have to even seem like help, but rather more about relationship with others of our same kind. This helping mindset, to be consistent, needs to come from overall daily attitude.
