Are We Becoming More Accustomed To Judging People These Days?

My first thought when I saw these folks help these bears was, “that’s awesome.” Then my next thought I am ashamed to say was, “more bears that will possibly hurt some unsuspecting hiker at some time in the future.” That thought quickly led to my 3rd and subsequent pondering.

It made me think of how we as humans judge. We often treat each other badly because we are afraid or make assumptions. We clump someone in a particular stereotype without really even giving them a chance. Just like I assumed all bears are mean ferocious animals.

How often have you seen a group of teenagers milling about in an alley and automatically assume they are up to mischief. Or possibly drive by some people along the side of the road cleaning up trash as part of a prison work release program and you think they are some sort of aliens that are so different than you. Even worse, maybe a homeless person who is less than cleanly walks into the church sanctuary and you try to avoid that person. Why do so many of us do that?

I don’t believe it is necessarily because we are bad or even that we have the “holier than thou” attitude so many get blamed for. I think it is, at least partly, due to fear. Fear of something or someone different than ourselves, fear of something we don’t fully understand or fear it could even be us someday. We may be so afraid that we shun that person. I am not so naive to think it is this for everyone. There are certainly plenty of people out there that do have the attitude they are better than everyone else. Those people usually can be easily spotted, but we must be careful not to necessarily assume that of those people either.

There are many people in the world that enjoy hurting others and we do need to be cautious. Most of the regular folk though are just trying to make their way in this world. There are times we get distracted or take wrong turns, which can land us in a heap of trouble. It can shape some of our behaviors, good and not so good. The point is, we are all at various places in our journey, but hopefully, we are always open to learning to be better people.

I know I need the reminder that you can’t necessarily judge a book just by its cover. Sometimes you have to flip through the pages to truly understand the story. That is so true with people too.

As far as the bears go, they deserve a shot too as they all aren’t seeking out humans to attack. They are just living their life too. Even though their spirit may be different than a human spirit, it is still the essence of who they are as a unique living being. The Bible tells us that if there is a physical body, there is also a spiritual body.

I would love to hear what your experience is on these ramblings.
