Should You Stick With It or Let It Go?
How do you know whether you should stick with it? Stick with what? Maybe it is feeling more energy, losing weight or maybe a career change. Do you need to find a way to make more money to support yourself or your family? There are many things we do and so many decision we make. My mother used to call me stubborn as I’d decide something and wouldn’t stop until I achieved it. I think a nicer term is tenacious. But sometimes that tenaciousness was futile. So how do you know whether you should stick with it?
I read a quote that says, “In the confrontation between the river and the rock, the river always wins.” The rock is strong, but the river perseveres. Sometimes what we want to achieve doesn’t get accomplished in our time frame. Not too many of us want to wait for success at anything. Hence, many give up too soon. Some of us, like myself, maybe hold on when we should move on.
So, how can you increase your odds for success?
To increase your success, it helps to make your goals specific and emotionally motivating. There are many goals we have in life, some little, some big and all the ones in-between. Maybe you need that perseverance to lose weight, get through a situation at work or help a troubled child.
Here are 3 things that might help.
1. Be clear about what you want.
2. Have an emotionally driving purpose for achieving your goal.
3. Persevere until you’ve reached your goal.
4. Remember to enjoy the journey to your goal.
When you are considering whether you should stick with it, remember that if you can only be happy when you actually reach your goal, then you miss out on all the wonderful things you can learn and experience along the way. Yes, even the mistakes. It is all part of learning and making the goals all the sweeter when you finally do achieve it. Keep at it. There may be times when it looks like you will never achieve what you want and for some, it may take a long time, but do what you can each day that moves you toward your goal. Some days it might not be much, but that’s okay, just know you’ll make it if you keep your dream in view.
