What Keeps You Going When You Don’t Understand Why?

Fill in the blank, when you don’t understand why (fill in the blank), how do I move forward? That blank could be a multitude of things in today’s world. It could be the loss of health, experiencing depression, death of a loved one or a myriad of things happening around the world. People deal with such a host of difficulties. We don’t always understand why things have to happen as they do.

With the bombardment of negative things from a petty misunderstanding to a child suffering, it sometimes can drag us down to depression and make it difficult to see that there is still good about. There are still people who care about others. The most important thing that can help you and I keep going is to know that though we may not understand, God is still sovereign and in control. No detail escapes Him. There are many times in life that you just have to trust Him even when you don’t understand why certain things are happening in your life and around the world.

The Lord doesn’t want us to be full of depression and anxiety. He created some pretty terrific things, both tangible and intangible for us that we may have joy. Unfortunately though, we do live in a fallen world and there is a plan the world will follow. There will be times of sadness, but all the more important to focus on the good and rejoice always in the Lord, not just in good times, but in times that are not so good. He is still sovereign and He is still working things out for the good of those who love Him.

It is critical that we believe that no matter how bad it gets or how long a season of difficulty you might be in, God will work it out for your good. You may see that work out on earth right away, sometime in your life or it may be you won’t understand until in heaven. You can trust God though that those details, even in those sad or confusing times will make sense at some point. If you don’t believe that, you will likely get stuck in your sadness, anger or grief. It will cause you to act in ways that will self-perpetuate negative behaviors.

No matter what path your life takes from moment to moment, the changes you are thankful for and the things you might wish had been different, God is still on the throne, He still loves you and wants to walk with you through every moment. His promises will not change and history proves you can rely on them. He is aware of your strengths and weaknesses. Though we all fall short of God’s glory, He still wanted a relationship with us, so He sent His son to earth, to show us His character and to be our Savior, which reconciled us to our Creator. It is mind boggling to think we are treasured children of our Heavenly Father.

Life may not always be easy, but the details are shaping each of us. I believe when it is my turn and your turn to go to heaven, you and I will have an “aha” moment as we see how all the details of our lives were interwoven for a purpose we didn’t understand on the other side of heaven.
