Wondering Where You Find Joy In This Life?

By Tana

For some reason, I have been thinking about where you find joy in life and do we often miss it? It seems so easy to let the challenges of the world and tasks of the day drown out any joy there might have been. Are we missing moments of joy that could be in our day that we lose forever because we aren’t looking for them?

I think I have missed a few that I could have thought of as joy. I don’t necessarily mean jumping up and down kind of joy, just moments that brings a little delight or in some way a positive moment.

I looked up the definition of joy. In the Merriam-webster dictionary, it gives these definitions…

1a :  the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires b: the expression or exhibition of such emotion.

2 :  a state of happiness or felicity

3 :  a source or cause of delight a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.

Basically then, it is a happy moment, right? I believe it involves positiveness, smiles and even laughter.

The next day after pondering if I have been missing times where joy was found in my day, I heard a sermon on stress and finding joy in life despite the stresses we all face in life. He said that the United States has 6% of the population and takes 90% of the world’s tranquilizers. Interesting, yes?

We have all seen people that we have thought about how quick they might have aged in a short period of time. Studies show that people who are positive, smile and laugh release natural anti-aging chemicals that help us stay healthy and feel better.

There have been studies of people with pain, insomnia and depression (and many others health challenges) that have committed to adding something funny in their day and have had remarkable turn around in their health and zest for life. The health and joy comes from training yourself to be on the lookout for joy in your day and recognize it.

If we allow the stresses of this life squash out our joy, it certainly is not going to make things easier. Yet, from my own experience, it is not always as easy as that. We all deal with serious stuff in life that can easily distract us from finding where the joy is in our day. Obviously, we do have to deal with some tough things, but laughter and joy can still play a part in the quality of our life. Did you know even listening to laughter can help you?

Having trouble getting started with where you find joy?  If all else fails, here are some ideas to get you laughing again.

Nothing like an infant to remind us what a belly laugh is.

Try this laughter yoga.  never actually watched laughter yoga before.  This cracked me up.

God made you to laugh. Love this video with comedian Ken Davis who reminds us of that

Where you find joy in your day starts with training yourself to watch for it. It could be a rewarding conversation with someone, helping another find their joy whether it is a simple smile or a compliment you give them or finding something funny to include in your day. Whatever is going on, it is okay to treat yourself to some joy and laughter. Do it daily!
