Work in Heaven

By Tana Osborn

work in heaven

Have you ever pondered about what kind of work you’ll do in heaven?

Many of us get up to go to work with such feelings of tread and reluctance. It could be because we are fatigued, tired of workplace drama and backstabbing or just not happy in our work for possibly a variety of reasons. The reason could even be that you are utterly burned out on your occupation. Maybe you have lost your spark, but are unable to ignite your once held passion for your work. Whatever the reason, you have fallen into this work mediocrity.

What??? I Have to Work in Heaven Too?

Did you know that you will have a job in heaven? At first, you might think, ugh! I just need rest. The first thing out of your mouth might be, “I thought heaven was supposed to be wonderful.” That’s thinking from the current earth perspective. Your work in heaven will be wonderful. You’ll have the energy and spring in your step to tackle your work with joy and enthusiasm. I know it can be hard to imagine that, maybe more so for some.

In Genesis 2:15, the Bible does tell us that from the very beginning that work was part of the plan. He told Adam and Eve to work the Garden of Eden and take care of it. What a fun job Adam had in the beginning naming all the animals. God’s word says that God brought the animals to Adam and allowed Adam to name them. (Genesis 2:19). I think that would be an awesome job. I imagine taking care of a garden with no nasty weeds and no icky bugs would be quite enjoyable. Alas, it was not to be for very long as man got off course and “the curse,” befell us all. At least, for now.

When things are restored, doesn’t it make sense that work, the way God intended, will be restored as well? Even God works. Jesus works and the Holy Spirit works. We are made in his image. Why would we want to lay around and not be part of His awesome plan for us? Sure, if we are fatigued or weary, we may not have the energy to get up and work on this restored New Earth, but we will not be that way anymore. For some, that might be hard to wrap your mind around. I get that!

Blissful slumber

Will we sleep in heaven too? Could it be a blissful slumber like this? Another topic indeed …

Hopefully, all of us, have had some days at work that went quite well. We are feeling good, everybody is getting along and you feel a sense of satisfaction that you did your job well. What if every day was like that, only much much better?

In the parable in Matthew 25:21, The master replied, “well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master’s happiness!” Ephesians 2:10 tells us that God created us to do good works. There are many verses in the Bible that tell us that God did intend for us to work in some way or another, but the curse has messed up everything, in one way or another. That spills over to our work life on many levels.

The Good News About Your Work In Heaven

The good news is that on the New Earth, our work will not be drudgery any longer. Just like now, there are many jobs that need to be done to rule the earth. We will all have to work together, but we will do so without fatigue, frustration and fighting.

What kind of work in heaven might be your exciting possibility? I think about tending a fruit and vegetable garden, with my dogs walking along side me. A sense of utter peace and fulfillment. Jesus stopping by to ask me how it is going? Asking me to bring some strawberries to the upcoming feast. I definitely see my daughter tending the panda bears, hyenas and koalas. That what she has a heart to do currently, but has never gotten the opportunity. At least at this point. My son, still working on that pondering. The point is, we may not understand all the things in our life and how they might somehow prepare us for that work on the New Earth, but that is where faith comes in I guess.

God’s word does tell us things about Heaven and the New Earth, but certainly not near every detail. We are told though that it will be infinitely better than we can imagine. What do you think your work in Heaven will be or that you might want it to be?
